ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme – High‑Speed Cinema Camera

The ARRI ALEXA 35 Xtreme is the latest evolution of ARRI’s flagship camera, redefining what’s possible for high‑speed and narrative filmmaking. It combines the industry‑leading image quality of the ALEXA 35 with expanded frame‑rate capabilities, a more efficient ARRICORE codec, and a rebuilt processing unit that makes it a true all‑in‑one solution for A‑camera, B‑camera, action, and high‑speed work—all in a compact Mini‑sized body.

Unmatched Image Quality & Dynamic Range
At its core, the ALEXA 35 Xtreme features ARRI’s 4.6K Super 35 ALEV 4 CMOS sensor (4608 × 3164) with a photosite pitch of 6.075 µm, delivering stunning resolution and detail extraction. The camera captures an impressive 17 stops of dynamic range, with film‑like highlight roll‑off and clean shadow detail that holds up perfectly in HDR and grading‑heavy workflows.

The sensor’s 4.6K 3:2 Open Gate area (28.0 × 19.2 mm) and multiple 16:9 and Anamorphic‑friendly modes (including 4.6K, 4K, 3.8K, 3.3K 6:5, Super 16, and HD) give you maximum flexibility for any aspect ratio or lens format.

High‑Speed & Sensor Overdrive
The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is built for high‑speed motion capture, with sensor frame rates from 0.75 fps up to 660 fps, depending on mode and resolution.

-In standard Sensor Modes (up to 330 fps), the camera maintains full 17‑stop dynamic range, making it ideal for slow‑motion beauty, action, sports, and documentary work where consistency with “normal‑speed” footage is critical.

-In Sensor Overdrive mode, frame rates can reach 660 fps at 11 stops of dynamic range, with base sensitivity increased to EI 1600. This is optimized for tightly controlled lighting where extreme slow‑motion is the priority and you’re willing to trade a few stops of latitude for maximum motion blur and timing precision.

Cutting‑Edge ARRICORE Codec
The ALEXA 35 Xtreme introduces ARRICORE, ARRI’s next‑generation RGB codec that delivers near‑ARRIRAW image quality at significantly reduced data rates. ARRICORE keeps all of ARRI’s color science intact while lowering storage and bandwidth requirements, making high‑end 4K workflows more affordable and more manageable in the field.

Like other ALEXA 35 codecs, ARRICORE stores in MXF, supports linear 12‑bit recording, and retains ALF‑4 ARRI Look Files, ARRI Textures, metadata, and embedded audio for seamless post integration. Third‑party tools that already support ALEXA 35 codecs are generally compatible with ARRICORE, minimizing pipeline changes.

Flexible Recording & Formats
The camera records to Codex Compact Drives (1TB / 2TB) and Compact Drive Express (1TB for ProRes‑only workflows), supporting a wide range of combinations:

-MXF/ARRIRAW (uncompressed, maximum flexibility)
-MXF/ARRICORE (high‑quality, reduced data)
-MXF/Apple ProRes 4444 XQ, 4444, and 422 HQ

High‑speed frame‑rate limits vary by format and resolution, but in ARRICORE you can reach:

-Up to 240 fps in 3.8K 16:9 and 3.8K 2.39:1
-Up to 330 fps in 2K Super 16 and HD with standard read‑out
-Up to 660 fps in 2K Super 16 and HD using Sensor Overdrive

Pre‑recording is available with a buffer up to 5 minutes, greatly simplifying capture of unpredictable high‑speed events such as sports, stunts, or wildlife.

Sensitivity & Color Science
The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is a high‑sensitivity camera, with an exposure index range of EI 160 to EI 6400 in 1/3‑stop steps, all while maintaining low noise and excellent color fidelity. In Enhanced Sensitivity mode, shadows are cleaner and more usable, especially when combined with ARRI Textures and in‑camera shadow shaping.

Colours are handled by ARRI’s REVEAL Color Science, which delivers natural, film‑like skin tones and subtle tonal gradations. With manual and auto white balance (2000K–11000K) and ±16 CC color correction, you can match environments or push stylized looks directly in‑camera.

Practical Filmmaking Features
The ALEXA 35 Xtreme is built for on‑set efficiency and reliability:

-Five interchangeable lens mounts: LPL (LBUS), PL (LBUS/Hirose), EF (LBUS), Leitz M, and ARRI PL‑to‑LPL adapter let you adapt quickly to different lens systems.
-Built‑in motorized ND filter wheel with Clear, 0.6, 1.2, and 1.8 stops for rapid exposure changes without filters or matte boxes.

Integrated electronic modules:
-Power Distribution Module (PDM‑1) with 7 extra power outputs
-Audio Extension Module (AEM‑1) with 2 extra mic preamps and accessory power

-MVF‑2 Multi Viewfinder (1920×1080 OLED, flip‑out touchscreen) and Camera Control Monitor CCM‑1 (7″ -HDR‑capable) both offer touch‑based menu control and full camera operation.

Side status display lets you check settings or playback without a viewfinder, useful for drones, gimbals, cranes, and Steadicam.

Power consumption is roughly 81 W for the body and MVF‑2, about 10% lower than the ALEXA 35, which translates to longer run‑times, less heat, and quieter operation.

Connectivity, Control & Wireless
The camera offers two independent 12G‑SDI outputs (422 and 444, up to 12G UHD), Ethernet for real‑time metadata streaming, and regulated 12 V / 24 V accessory power across multiple ports.

Remote control is handled via:

-MVF‑2 (wired, up to 10 m)
-CCM‑1
-ARRI Camera Companion App (with upgraded 5 GHz WiFi, WiFi roaming, and auto‑reconnect)
-ARRI ECS, CAP over Ethernet/WiFi, GPIO, and Skaarhoj panels for custom control rigs

Internal WiFi and White Radio support lens and camera control, while the camera remains IP51 rated for dust and splash resistance in harsh shoots.
